Similarities and Differences between Codependency, Obsessive &
Compulsive Disorders and Phobias
Similarities
1. An identifiable evoking stimulus results in increased
anxiety.
2. Efforts are made to avoid or escape from the evoking
stimulus.
3. Both disorders respond well to exposure therapy whose
basic element is actual or imagined contact with the feared
stimulus.
Differences
1. Phobics have persistent worries concerning a central
theme, while (codependents &) obsessive-compulsives have more
stereotyped repetitive thoughts and actions.
2. The two disorders have different evoking stimuli. Dirt,
contagion, or harm to others are common obsessive compulsive
(& codependents) preoccupations, but cause few phobics much
difficulty. Rituals are common in obsessive-compulsive
disorders (& codependents), but not in phobias.
3. Obsessive-compulsives (& codependents) usually look less tense and panic
stricken when in contact with their evoking stimulus than
are phobics.
4. Obsessive-compulsives (& codependents) take longer to feel better after
they avoid or escape from their evoking stimulus (e.g., dirt)
than is the case for phobics and their evoking stimuli
(e.g., spiders).
5. Obsessive-compulsives (& codependents) spend more time thinking about
improbable future contacts with the evoking stimulus than
do phobics.
The disorder:
Note that codependency is in the spectrum of OCD.
1. The obsession or compulsion intrudes insistently and
persistently into the individual's awareness.
2. A feeling of anxious dread occurs if the thought or
act is prevented for some reason.
3. The obsession or compulsion is experienced as foreign
to oneself as a psychological being; it is unacceptable
and uncontrollable.
4. The individual recognizes the absurdity and irrationality
of the obsession or compulsion .
5. The individual feels a need to resist it.
